Poets draw their work from many sources, including an engagement with earlier poetry. In this course, we will consider the work of five late twentieth-century poets in light of their relation to previous traditions: Robert Creeley's For Love and the lyrics of Sidney, Campion, and Herrick; selected poems by Elizabeth Bishop and the meditative poets of the Baroque; Gwendolyn Brooks's Annie Allen and the translations and poems of Pope; John Ashbery's April Galleons and the Romantics; Derek Walcott's Omeros and Tennyson.
