This course introduces students to men and women British poets from the late-seventeenth century to about 1925. We will consider issues of poetic form in light of the cultural, social, and political climates in which these authors worked. Questions of gender, imperialism, literary authority, and literary periodization will guide our study of works by Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Charlotte Smith, John Keats, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Christina Rosetti, Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, Thomas Hardy, T. S. Eliot, and W. B. Yeats. Students will write 2 short analytical papers and one longer research paper and are expected to participate extensively both in the classroom and on the internet.
