This course will trace the evolution of the novel in Britain, from the time of its emergence out of the news/novels discourse of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, thorugh the period of its cultural dominance in the nineteenth century, to the era of its cultural marginalization as aesthetic object by early-twentieth century Modernism. Readings will be drawn from among the following:  Aphra Behn, Daniel Defoe, Laurence Sterne, Jane austen, Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens, Henry James, Joseph Conrad, and Virginia Woolf. Requirements include 2 brief critical papers and one longer critical research paper. 

Note: This course is required of most majors. The requirement may be fulfilled alternatively by two of the following courses: English 45, 55, 65.
