The course continues the survey of English 41, beginning with the poetry of Pope and Johnson, and continuing with the rise of English literary criticism, the apogee of eighteenth-century English drama (Sheridan, Goldsmith), Johnson and Boswell and the emergence of the modern biography, and the poetry of the later eighteenth-century from Churchill to Blake. My effort throughout is to show how the *ancient regime* of early modern England gradually disapears as new influences, including gothicism, sentimentalism, and the beginning of the age of revolution replace the outgoing approach of satire with the tortured introspective style of early nineteenth-century literature.
Note: This and English 245 are the only eighteeneth-century literature courses being offered by English this term.
