Fulfills Distribution III: Arts & Letters

As part of the foundation of the English major, this course aims to introduce students to the thematic and formal issues of Romantic, Victorian, and Modernist poetry. Through detailed, indepth examination of poems by Blake, Keats, Tennyson, the Brownings, Yeats, and Eliot (among others), students will also gain an understanding of various terms and topics in English poetics -- such as meter, trope, diction, and genre. Regular classroom attendance and participation will be crucial; written requirements will include two brief essays and (perhaps) a take home final exam.
