This course, designed for creative writers, will examine a variety of approaches to the editorial act. Its fundamental premise is that editing describes the conscience of a text, focusing its intentions and determining its community. The types of community explored will be those that are primary to the modern writer, from the self-reflected, to the community of peers, through communities of principle and identity. The method of exploration can best be described as negotiation. The course will be highly participatory, combining a workshop approach with conducted discussions of various editing processes and readings by editors about editing. Of particular concern will be correspondence, small press, and performative modes. Students will edit each others writing. Depending on the group's cohesiveness and interest, students could actually produce an informal journal.
