This course will focus on the Renaissance theater and the variety of Shakespeare's plays. We will particularly analyze the social significance of the theater and its relation to new notions of identity, status, and gender. The plays we will read will be chosen from: Richard II, Henry IV, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, Othello, Lear, Pericles.
