This course provides an introduction to a wide range of literature written in America during the first half of the 20th century. Reading across literary genres, we will examine the relationship between literature and the rapidly changing American landscape. We will trace intellectual movements, and consider the way in which writers responded to diverse phenomena such as the Depression, world war, racial division, and the automobile. Writers we study are likely to include Chopin, DuBois, Eliot, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Frost, Hemingway, Hughes, Hurston, Moore, Pound, Stein, Warton, and Wright. Requirements include two short papers, one longer research paper, and a comprehensive final examination. Students are also required to have and use an e-mail account.
