TR 3-4:30

n this course we will learn more about the English language by and for itself: how it fits within the other Indo-European languages and how it 'develops' from Old English to Middle English, then to Early Modern English finally to arrive at Present Day English. This may sound very technical and yet other aspects will be included. Literary excerpts in all Englishes will be handed out, and especially, as the specific aim of the course we will endeavour to become more sensitive to ways in which English _functions_ as a language. That, in turn, will help us understand why this particular language has become the _lingua franca_ of today.
