This course will explore the problem of history in some classic examples of
British and Irish modenism.  We will consider problems of historical
representation, theories of historical knowledge and memory and the    
historical status of the subject in texts such as Joyce's A Portrait of the
Artist as a Young Man  and Finnegans Wake (excerpted), Woolf's To the 
Lighthouse,   D.M. Thomas's The White Hotel,  H.G. Well's The Time Machine,
 T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray  and 
Winterson's Sexing the Cherry.  We will also include screenings and
discussion of at least two films, Rossellini's neorealist classic, 
Viaggio in Italia, and Stephen Gyllenhaal's recent meditation on history,
Waterland.

Requirements:  Two papers (7-10 pp.); weekly quizzes; no final exam.
