The Short Story
Bill Freedman profile

MTWR 1:00 2:35

A study of the short story as a genre and as a crystallized mode of prose fiction, with special and cautiously divided attention to plot, character, point of view, and theme. The course will deal with the great short-story writers of America and Europe, from Hawthorne, Poe, and Wharton through Lawrence, Mansfield, Kafka, and Borges. Close reading to develop analytic and interpretive skills; open discussion in a lively atmosphere of free exchange.
