Eighteenth-Century British Fiction

Prose fiction in the eighteenth century developed in two directions: towards an inclusion of and comment upon social issues and towards a description, or construction, of private consciousness and intimate personal relations. The course will include a survey of the varieties of fiction in the eighteenth century, culminating with Caleb Williams by William Godwin and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Other authors to be read include Behn, Defoe, Swift, Richardson, Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, and Burney. Requirements: two essays, a mid-term examination, a final examination, and spot quizzes.
Note: This course, along with English 55 or 65 (or 255 or 265), can be used to satisfy the English 203 (History of the British Novel) requirement.
