Topics in the Modern British Novel: James Joyce

This course will be a survey of Joyce's major writings, excluding Finnegans Wake. In our discussions we will attempt to identify Joyce's innovations as a modernist writer, and we will interrogate the major political, social and religious influences upon his work, as well as its intersections with national and gender politics. We will also address the implications of Joyce's stylistic and narrative experimentation, and its influence on later Irish writers such as Samuel Beckett. We will read Joyce's Dubliners, Chamber Music, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Exiles, Ulysses, and Beckett's Murphy. We will also read Joyce's critical writings and selections from his collected letters. Course requirements include three papers of varying lengths and one in-class presentation.
