Note: Students may take this course as a substitute for the usual English 200 requirement.
English 83 will chart the literary and cultural movements of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America (e.g., realism, naturalism, regionalism, the growth of the modern city and the development of the Western frontier) through a reading of novels by Twain, W.D. Howells, Henry James, Kate Chopin, Frank Norris, Jack London, Theodore Dreiser, and Edith Wharton. A brief selection of supplemental readings will include short works of fiction and essays by these novelists and other contemporary writers. Two papers of moderate length and two reading quizzes.
