By reading and discussing at least one of Chaucer's dream
visions, parts of Troilus and Criseyde, and selections from The
Canterbury Tales, students in this course should gain a deeper
understanding and appreciation of the diversity and achievement
of Chaucer's poetry. The discussion will consider Chaucer as a
medieval poet and as an accomplished narrative artist and explore
such major topics as his use of literary conventions, such as,
the romance, the fabliaux, "courtly love," moral allegory, etc.
In addition to regular class attendance, two critical essays and
a final examination are required. There may be some shorter
tests, depending on the size of the class.
