American Performance Art is a genre that has emerged distinctly in the his short history has been dominated by women and lesbian and gay performers, which makes it unique in the history of American performance.  We will be studying the form and some of its principle players with an eye toward theorizing the relationship between the "identities' of its performers and the shape or form of the art.  Some of the performers whose work we will be examining include:  Karen Finley, Carolee Schneeman, Rachel Rosenthal, Tim Miller, Holly Hughes, John Fleck, Deb Margolin and other lesser known artists.  I will be inviting some of these artists to visit us and talk about their work.  You will be required to produce your own piece of performance art and w
