Modern British Novel: James Joyce's Ulysses

This course will be an in-depth investigation of James Joyces Ulysses. In our discussions, we will attempt to identify how this novel operates as a modernist text, and we will attempt to interrogate the major political, social and literary influences upon the novel. We will also address the implications of Joyces' stylistic and narrative expermentation, its intersections wiual politics, and the importance of Ireland in these context. In addition to Ulysses, we will read Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Homer's The Odyssey, and Shakespeare's Hamlet. Course requirements are: three papers of various lengths, one fifteen-minute in-class presentation, and a final examination.
