vels make them a potential mode for transforming conciousness?  What role do the writers' audiences play in the creation of meaning?  Texts we will use to answer such questions may include Cooper's THE PRAIRIE, Hawthorne's THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES, Melville's MOBY-DICK, Twain's HUCKLEBERRY FINN, Norris's MCTEAGUE, Dreiser's SISTER CARRIE, Wharton's SUMMER, Cather's THE PROFESSOR'S HOUSE, Faulkner's THE SOUND AND THE FURY, Dos Passos's USA, E.L. Doctorow's RAGTIME, Walker's THE COLOR PURPLE.  An attentive presence and four short papers will be among the requirements.
