20th Century British Novel
James English profile

MWF 2

This is a general introduction to the 20th-century British novel.  We will be reading four novels by canonical figures of the modernist period (Women in Love by D.H.Lawrence, Portrait of the Artist by James Joyce, The Apes of God by Wyndham Lewis, and Between the Acts by Virginia Woolf) and four novels by writers of the postmodernist period:  The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson, Lanark by Alisdair Gray, an The Bone People by Keri Hulme.  The class will be run on art-discussion format, and our central emphasis will be on the ways in which the opposition of male to female or masculine to feminine organizes modern and postmodern conceptions of the artist and the work of art.  Written work for the course will include four midterms, a final exam, and two essays. (Note: Majors may take this course, with English 55 or 45, instead of English 203 to fulfill the major requirement.)
