19th Century British Novel
Martin Orzeck profile

MWF 11

Check your eyeglass prescriptions!  In this class we will be reading among the best works from the great age of the British novel.  We will sample books by Jane Austen, Walter Scott, Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Charles Dickens, W.M. Thackeray, George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans), and Thomas Hardy.  During this era of profound change and (some would say) progress, the English novelist functioned variously as social critic, prophet, our great-grandparents wrestled with the issues that seemed to be threatening their own illusory social fabric.  All are welcome here!  But you should be forwarned of periodic quizzes to insure you are keeping up with the reading, a short paper, a term essay, and a final.  (Note: Majors may take this course, with English 45 or 65, instead of taking English 203 as part of the major requirement.)
