TR 10:30-12

British poetry and prose (exclusive of the novel) from 1750 to 1800, focusing
on the writings and influence of Samuel Johnson, the journals of James
Boswell and his Life of Johnson, and the intellectual prose of writers such as Edward
Gibbon, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Edmund Burke as well as the poetry of Gray,
Collins, Crabbe, BlaAll these will be studied in relation to
their social, political, critical, and artistic backgrounds. (Note: This is
the only 18th-century literature course offered this semester.)
