This class is designed for students interested in becoming familiar (or more
familiar) with a selection of Shakespeare's plays: three comedies, three
tragedies, three histories and two romances. Class lectures will draw
out the central concerns of each play by exploring the complex ways characters are
interconnected: through language, motivation, situation, and action.
Classes will follow a lecture format, though questions will be encouraged. One paper
is required and two exams will be given. (Note: See also English 37, 337 &
