Topics in Literature: Boundaries
Farah Griffin profile

MWF 10

This class focuses on the way 20th-Century American writers portray and
confront social and cultural boundaries that are often considered fixed or
natural:  class, gender, generation, race, nation.  We will also explore the
ways in which some authors challenge generic boundaries as well.  Readings
include F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Edith Wharton's House of
Mirth, Toni Morrison's Beloved, Gloria Anzaldua's Borderlands, and Amy Tan's
The Joy Luck Club. (Please note: This course is a freshman seminar; a few
sophomores may enroll by permission of Prof. Griffin.)
