Renaissance Epic
Maureen Quilligan profile

R 9-12

Focussing centrally on Spenser and Milton, the course will also take up continental Renaissance epics and epic theory: Ariosto, Tasso, Rosnard, D'Aubigny. The main emphasis of the course discussion will be on the process of canon formation, using the privileged status of epic to investigate the interconnections between the social and literary procedures by which an elite list of texts gets constructed.
