The Post-War Family in American Literature
Bob Perelman profile
MWF 1
We will look at representations of the family in a variety of works, from novels to poetry to film. Novelists will include Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, Philip Roth, and Jack Kerouac. In poetry we will read selections from the New York School and the confessionals, among others. We will look at films such as The Manchurian Candidate and Rebel Without a Cause. The relation of the family to wider political structures and the political standing of the artist will be key issues.
