English 045.001
The 18th-Century Novel
Toni Bowers profile

TR 3-4:30

An introduction to some of the earliest novels published in English and to the culture in which they emerged. We shall sample the variety and fluidity of the novel genre as it took shape in Britain in the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, emphasizing the period between 1700 and 1750. Students are not required to have any background in eighteenth-century literature, but should be familiar with the fundamentals of deliberative writing. Requirements: two papers, midterm, final, periodic quizzes, and active class participation.
