The Age of Pope

We will read poems, non-fictional prose (no novels), and plays from the Restoration (1660) to the middle of the eighteenth century. Dryden, Congreve, Pope, Swift, Gay, Addison, Steele, Mandeville, and other authors from those years will make up our reading list, although the main emphasis will be on Pope and Swift and their circle. There will be three papers and a final exam.
