Major British Writers

Required for all English majors.  An intensive study of great works by major writers from the fourteenth through the seventeenth century.  The course is intended to introduce students to the major periods of English literary history as well as to masterpieces by major writers.  All sections meet together each Monday at 3:00 to hear lectures by various faculty members who are experts on the period or writers being read that week; each section will meet twice more weekly to discuss the week's lecture and reading at the times noted above.  Assignments will include selections from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and from Spenser's The Faerie Queene, two plays by Shakespeare, poems by Donne and Milton's Paradise Lost.  In addition, some short selections from typical Medieval and
Renaissance texts will be assigned.
