Freedom: Afro-Diasporic Improvisations with the Enlightenment
This course will consider various interruptions of and improvisations with Enlightenment thought about freedom staged by the African diaspora in the Americas through the early nineteenth century. We will focus almost exclusively on primary texts and emphasize Anglophone literature. However, rather than aim for historical or geographical coverage we will instead attend to the philosophical and political density of "freedom." Class discussions will thus be generated from and supported by collaborative interpretations of the language of the texts in question. One of our central questions will be: how do these texts perform freedom's future?
