An introduction to some of the earliest novels published in English and to the culture in which they emerged. We'll sample the variety and fluidity of the genre as it took shape in Britain between the late seventeenth and the late eighteenth centuries, emphasizing the period between 1700 and 1750. Required: class participation, exams, papers, unannounced quizzes.
