We shall explore life writings and issues of self-represtation in the Afro-American Expressive Cultural tradition from the 18th through the 20th Century. We shall pay special attention to questions of gender, audience, and authenticity. Representative works by Douglass, Jacobs, Hughes, Lorde, and others will form the corpus of our reading.
