English 800 is an intensive course in the theory and practice of teaching students to write about literature. Teaching multiple sections of a common syllabus under the supervision of an experienced instructor, beginning teachers work together to find effective pedagogical methods, to formulate quality assignments and lesson plans, to create syllabi, in-class assignments and exams and to learn the art and skill of successful undergraduate teaching. Pedagogical topics covered in English 800 include: how to plan a class hour; constructive grading; using literature to teach writing; teaching difficult texts; when to lecture/when to discuss. Close attention is is given to the pedagogy of writing with particular emphasis on the following writing skills: writing to an audience; strategies of observation and data gathering; thesis formulation and essay organization; expository development; using textual evidence; responsible use of research; editing, polishing, proofreading.
This year's English 800 will treat the topic of natures (many) natures in American literature through 1900.
