Susan Stewart profile

W. 9-12

English 550 is a graduate seminar regarding issues of Romantic theory and practice. Focusing on theories of the imagination, the beautiful, the sublime, and the fragment, we will read as well a number of major poetic works of the Romantic period. Our emphasis will be the British Romantics, but we also will draw on resources from other traditions. Texts will include works by Addison, Akenside, Burke, Young, Lord Kames, Kant, Schiller, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, Byron, Goethe, Warnock, and Lacoue-Labarthe and Nancy. Students will write four brief response papers and a final paper of 10-12 pages.
