This course is an extensive survey of major landmarks of English poetry from the late seventeenth to the late eighteenth centuries, with due attention to canonicity (Dryden, Pope, Johnson) but with equal focus on genres often ignored (e. g., pornography, parody, the gay and lesbian tradition) and adaptations of older genres (e. g., georgic, ode, lyric) to new subjects and occasions, especially by women poets.
