Political Theater
Rebecca Bushnell profile

R 12-3

Taught in conjunction with Eng. 8, the seminar will explore the practice of political theater in different times and places, as well as the "pedagogy" of political theater. The selection of plays to be taught in both the graduate seminar and the sections of Eng. 8 will be determined by group consensus in a preliminary meeting in the spring, but the plays will likely include some from the classical period, the English Renaissance, and twentieth-century Europe, America, and post-colonial areas. Students in Eng. 800 will collaborate on all aspects of constructing both the graduate seminar and Eng. 8: the preparation of syllabi, writing assignments, exams, discussion questions, etc. In addition to reading the plays and different theories of political theater and art, the graduate seminar will study both the theory and practice of pedagogy, including the issue of pedagogical authority, the design of syllabi, the teaching of writing, the use of electronic technology, and the conducting of class discussions. The subject of political theater itself will help us integrate the scholarly and pedagogical sides of the course, when we come to terms with political theater's function as a form of pedagogy. Students for the course will be graded on a set of written exercises and a seminar presentation.
