The British Novel, 1800-1850

This course will be a broad survey which makes no pretense to thematic unity. Instead, we will be reading a variety of novels which represent the diversity of novelistic forms in the early part of the nineteenth century. The reading list will include some gothics (Lewis' The Monk, M. Shelley's Frankenstein), a Jane Austen novel (either Mansfield Park or
Emma), Hogg's Confessions of a Justified Sinner, Scott's The Heart of Midlothian, Dickens' David Copperfield, and the Bronte sisters' Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. These will be supplemented with short secondary readings. Requirements include 4 brief critical papers and one longer critical research paper.
Note: Undergraduate majors who are seniors and who haven't fulfilled the English 203 requirement may take this course *and* must have taken or will take any of one of the following--Enlgish 45, 245, 65, 265--in place of 203. In any case, this and other 500-level courses are open to advanced undergraduate majors.
