Pedagogical Issues in the Teaching of African American Literature

The conceptual thrust of English 800 will be to frame the pedagogical isuues which inhere to the African American literature course. In addition to the readings from the English 001 syllabus, we will utilize supplemental materials which discuss the evolution of pedagogical thought as it pertains to African American literature. Thus, we will be concerned with how African American pedagogy has shifted in the last 25 years from a discursive practice based on issues of inclusion to a discourse foregrounded in issues of intertextuality to one concerned, finally, with issues of multiculturalism. Critical voices in the course will include Sterling A. Brown, Houston Baker, Henry Louis Gates, Hazel Carby, Valerie Smith, and Hortense Spillers. There will be short papers and class visits as well.
