T 12-3

In this course we will read (almost) everything Joyce wrote, up to and including Ulysses (with the possible exception of the letters, which will be on reserve). The readings will include the poems, epiphanies, some of the early critical essays, Stephen Hero, Dubliners, Portrait (and the 1904 "Portrait" essay), Giacomo Joyce, Exiles and Ulysses. We will also look at the notes for Ulysses, and we will devote a class to the issue of editing Ulysses. Finally, we will sample different critical approaches and their implications, paying particular attention to issues involving gender, historical context, politics and style. Requirements include one collaborative seminar report and a final 20-page paper. I may ask for a precis of the paper 2/3 of the way through the semester.
