Peter Stallybrass profile

M 9-12

This course will focus upon conceptions of "matter," with particular attention to clothes as a site of intersection between "subject" and "object." Our aim will be to examine the historical and cultural transformations of things both in terms of economic production and in terms of love and desire. Readings will include selections from Karl Marx (Capital), Sigmund Freud (particularly his work on fetishism), Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida (The Truth in Painting), Pierre Bourdieu, Annette Weiner, and Carolyn Steedman, and will pay specific attention to seventeenth and eighteenth century texts (including Cymbeline, Pamela, and fairy tales).
